Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow Trailer Connector Installation - 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500

Hola neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today, we're taking a look and installing the Hopkins 7-way as well 5-flat and 4-flat trailer wiring connector on a 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500. Now, this is a great option to upgrade from your previous 7-pole, not only because you can get a nice plug that goes up 180 degrees, which this one, being in an angle, makes it a lot easier to get our plug in, whereas our previous one, you can see it doesn't quite open up as much, so you're kinda at a downward angle, it's hard to see if it's actually attached. And this one also has two handles here to make it easy, but the great part too is you're no longer stuck with just a 7-pole, you also have a 5-flat as well as a 4-flat down here, so you can still get those lighting functions, whether you're hooking up to your 7 or your 4-flat, and you can actually do both. So our neighbor here today is flat towing his vehicle, but he also has a bike rack that has lights on it, so he can plug his 4-pole in here, and it's gonna work on both of them. What's nice about this kit is it's going to be a pretty simple installation, because it comes with a bracket to mount up. Ours already had that, so we don't have to use it, but it also comes with the mounting hardware here, and it also comes with terminal grease, so you can get that dielectric protection on your plug. more

Then on the other side here we're going to have our power wire that's going to run to the battery of the vehicle with our fuse assembly and then your connectors to attach that to the battery and then a fuse to go in afterwards. On the back side here we'll go ahead and separate these wires so we can see what we're doing. Now we'll go ahead and remove the side panels here on the side of the vehicle by rotating the knob, pulling out, and lifting up. We'll set these over to the front so we can expose the manufactures wiring harness. We'll repeat that on the passenger side as well. Today on our 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter we're going to be installing the Tow Ready Upgraded Circuit Protected Modulite with 4 Pole Harness, part number 119179KIT. We're going to begin here by first opening up both of the rear doors of the vehicle. Now we've already gone and determined that the taillights are actually three wire system because the top light here is the brake light, the middle light here is the turn signal and this section right here is actually the running light. We're going to need to remove the light assembly from the vehicle by removing this screw here, here, and there. Go ahead and take our plastic trim panel tool here just work it in behind the light to release the snaps, the clips, that hold it in place. In order to get the light plug out here you're going to need to . there's a little locking tab on the top and bottom. Today on this 2014 Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van, we're going to install part number HM48470 from Hopkins. Now our new connector is going to replace the pre-existing seven pole connector on our van. We'll go and dismantle your existing connector and get down to our bare wires. Once we're down to our bare wires we'll go ahead and even them out. Take our four pole wires and spread them apart. Now our four pole wire we have a white ground wire which really isn't being used, so we're just going to cut it off short because we already have a pre-existing ground wire thats much larger and can carry the current of our remaining wires. Okay, we take our wires and we're going to run them through the cover here first. more

To begin our install, we'll first open up the rear trunk, then we'll remove the spare tire cover. Next, we'll need to remove the rear threshold. The rear threshold is held in by several push pin clips. To remove the push pin clips, we'll simply use a small flat-blade screwdriver, get underneath the center and pry it up. Then we can remove the entire clip. Once we have all the clips removed, we'll set them aside, then gently get underneath the threshold and pry it up and out of its position. We'll then disconnect the wiring that runs to the interior lights. more
